You probably learnt English most of your life and got high grades at school and even considered yourself excellent at English. But for many people when they arrive in Australia or other native English speaking countries for the first time there is a huge shock. And it’s not the culture. They are hit with the reality that they cant understand native speakers!
I’m sure you are watching their lips move in desperation to work out what they are saying but their damn lips aren’t moving! Why aren’t their lips moving?
Why can’t I understand Native English speakers?
The simple truth is native English speakers are lazy. They have found the most efficient, effortless way to communicate. Let’s get into detail!
There are two types of sound in speech. Consonants and vowels. Consonants are made when the teeth touch the lips, lips touch lips, or the tongue touches the inside of the mouth. Vowels are pure voice slightly altered by the shape of the tongue. Vowels are effortless to produce. Consonants take effort! Think about the English th sound! How much effort is that to produce correctly? So the solution native English speakers came up with is to focus on the vowels and soften or completely drop the consonants. That’s why you can’t understand native speakers and why their lips barely move!
How to understand native speakers?
You need to learn to focus on the vowels and not rely on the consonants to identify the words. To do this you need to learn to let go of consonants in your own speech. This will revolutionise how you speak and make it so effortless. Speaking well be as easy as yawning and you will never misunderstand you boss, your co-workers, those important phone calls. You’ll advance to the next level in your language goals and be indistinguishable from a native English speaker. You’ll be proud and confident and nothing will be left to hold you back from success. That’s our goal.
